Crossslash asked:

I want to start a compost pile, one that’ll be ready by mid feb. I’d also like it to be fairly strong- so what breaks down quickly into organic nitrogen and carbon? If you’ve got some things, recommendations, or tips on making a good pile, please say so! Thanks!

I have a compost pile that I just recently found a bees nest dug inside the pile and I don’t want to use chemicals because it will ruin the compost. Any one have any suggestions?

What are some ingredients I can add besides pine needles, bark and cones?
Coffe grounds, good Idea. There are only about 5 starbucks in all of Utah, but I know of one a few miles away.

We are getting ready to put together a compost pile. My question is whether you continuously add materials such as lawn clippings (spring and summer) and kitchen scaps to it, or is there a point where you let it sit and start a new pile? I don’t want 20 piles going at once, but if you keep adding, how is it ever ready?

Please elaborate the answer. I know the quality of “tea” will depend on quality of compost and water. I need a thumb rule.

My kids always leave uneaten cereal (oatmeal and grits) with a little bit of milk after breakfast. Is it okay to just throw this on the compost pile? I’ve heard that you shouldn’t put milk on it but have never received an explanation as to why.

It’s 28 degrees outside and the ground is frozen. I live in a close community (not much land between houses) so I have to be careful about odors. We also have lots of wildlife.
I’d like to start a compost but don’t know anything about it. Any ideas?

I really want to make my own compost but I don’t have any place in my yard where I can just pile up waste so I was wondering if I could make it in a trash can (like the ones used to put grass cuttings and twigs for the truck to pick up). If I do that then how should I start it and with what and how can I make sure that air gets in the bottom? Thank you all for your ideas.
