There will be a nest buried in the pile, somewhere. Wear heavy clothing, and dig it out. Then, prepare yellowjacket pie: cook at 2200 F until done. A propane torch does nicely.

they sell bee & wasp Killer at Home Depot which you can spray from about 12 feet away. Kills on contact, you will have to dig out nest once you don’t see them buzzing around anymore. It shouldn’t hurt your compost I don’t believe. Good luck!

If you really want to get rid of them use sevin–make a mud pie, wait till dark when they slow down, throw some sevin in and plug the hole with your mud pie–if you are in the south you will have nothing but bugs in a compost pile, been there and tired it in NC grew ever critter in the sun and very little compost. People dust dogs with sevin and they are ok.
